It's great being a disability professional!

§         You are making a difference in people's lives.

§         You are part of a worldwide movement for human rights: of equality, dignity and participation.

§         You find real meaning in creating a level playing field: a community where everyone is included and everyone has chance to reach their potential: to make their unique contribution.

§         Being a disability professional is full of challenges.

§         Whether your leadership role is formal or informal, whether your support role is direct or indirect, it's a unique feeling to finish each day knowing that - step by step - people's lives are changing because of you.

§         When you're a disability professional, there's real meaning in work and in life.

If you are interested in supporting people with disabilities to be included in our communities, to lead the life they choose and to plan and support them to realise their own hopes, dreams, aspirations and goals, then working in the disability sector may be for you.   You will find that the satisfaction of direct support for people with disabilities in everyday living tasks in their homes, and around recreation, leisure and work in the community is supplemented and enhanced by career progression to diverse and rewarding career opportunities. These roles include supervisory and service management roles such as house supervisors, program managers, client services manager as well as more specialised roles such as project officers, case manager, Behaviour Intervention Support Team practitioner, disability liaison officer or roles in policy planning and management. (Please see career pathways overleaf for more detail).

Would you like to gain a qualification?

Increasingly training and qualifications are valued in the disability sector and offer opportunities for life-long learning to go hand-in-hand with career progression. Some disability service organisations offer traineeships in Certificate III and IV in Disability Work so that you can get your qualification whilst working.

Some University degrees in Disability Studies recognise relevant Certificate IV and VI TAFE qualifications by offering course credits against the degree qualification.  And if you are really keen a degree qualification can lead to a further honours year, a Graduate Diploma in Disability Studies and Master of Applied Science. A degree may also lead to university study in specialist areas such as teaching, social work, occupational or speech therapy.

Work casual, part-time…more flexible than hospitality!

In supporting people to lead the life of their choice there is a high degree of flexible work through which you can support your own work: life balance. There are opportunities for:

§        Casual, part time and contract work with training available on the job.

§        Weekdays, evenings, overnights and weekend work

§        A range of salary rates and levels across organisations dependent on the nature and level of work you are performing

§        The opportunity of using transferable skills  in areas such as aged care, in schools and in community development, both inter-state and overseas.
